Ukraine is among the 20 largest producers of conventional sugar in the world and is one of the 10 largest exporters in 2018. Thus, the amount of exports of such products over the past year amounted to USD 217 million. Now Ukraine has just begun production of organic sugar, but it is already in demand in the European market and in the future, this products has to conquer the world markets as well.

This has been noted by the acting Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine – Olga Trofimtseva during a press conference on presentation of the first organic sugar in Ukraine.

 “A very momentous event has happened today. We have the first organic sugar produced in our country. I was, actually, witnessing the birth of this idea. Only 10 years ago, the first domestic organic products began to appear on the shelves of our stores, and today we may see the dynamic development of organic production in the domestic market,” the acting Minister noted.

She added that Ukraine has been increasing the variety of processed organic products, because such products are in high demand in the foreign markets.

In Ukraine, in 2009-2010, organic sugar beet was certified as raw material. In 2018, 247 hectares were under the organic beets and the first organic sugar was produced. This product was presented in early February 2019 during the largest international exhibition of organic products “Biofah”. During the exhibition, the company from the Netherlands won the auction for purchase of the first batch of organic sugar (850 tons). Next presentation of organic sugar will at the Biofah exhibition in China, where the National Pavilion of Ukraine will be presented for the first time.
