Today, the grain market is the key and strategic in the agricultural sector of Ukraine. It largely determines the pace of development of the agriculture and the economy as a whole, guarantees the food security of the state. Grain crops form more than a quarter of aggregate agricultural production and generate more than USD 7 billion of positive surplus in foreign trade.
Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine - Olena Kovaliova noted during the opening of the XVI International Conference "Black Sea Grain-2019" on April 10.
“Today, the global food market is under pressure from three basic factors: population growth, rising incomes and intensive urbanization. As a result, global demand for grain, the basis of the food and feed ration, has grown by 50% over the last decade. Ukraine is one of the few countries in the world that have the opportunity to increase crop production, increase export potential and meet global needs, ”said Olena Kovaliova.
According to her, grain production has not fallen below 60 million tons over the last five years in Ukraine, reaching a record 70.1 million tons in 2018.
She added that the 2018 / 2019 marketing year could become a record-breaking for the export of grain crops - about 49 million tons. Today, more than 39 million tons have been exported.
“Cooperation with international organizations and companies remains one of the priority areas of foreign economic activity of our country. We actively cooperate with both - market participants and international organizations, in particular FAO, AMIS, the International Grain Council (IGC) and others to determine the optimal ways of developing efficient agricultural production and ensure access to food, ”said Olena Kovaliova.
She also emphasized that the conference “Black Sea Grain-2019” is an effective platform for discussion of new trends in the global, regional and domestic agricultural markets, wishing all participants effective work, constructive discussions and success in implementation of new projects.
The Black Sea Grain Conference is an international platform for discussing the most topical issues and prospects for the development of the global grain market and the markets of the Black Sea region. The conference has been held since 2004 and is one of the largest global grain forums.
