Taras Kutovyi: Mutually beneficial relations between Ukraine and Italy should be brought to a new level

This was stated by the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Kutovyi during the meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy to Ukraine H.E. Mr. Davide La Cecilia.

In order to expand mutual trade between the countries it is expedient to facilitate direct contracts between Ukrainian producers of food and Italian importers.

This was stated by the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Kutovyi during the meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy to Ukraine H.E. Mr. Davide La Cecilia.

"The Ukrainian side is ready to facilitate direct negotiations with representatives of leading domestic enterprises of food and processing industry", - Taras Kutovyi said, in particular.

The Minister briefed the honorable guest with the strategy called "3 + 5", land reform progress, plans to de-monopolize alcohol industry and said that Ukraine's priority is to support small and medium businesses that are traditional for Italy.

Discussing the dynamics of bilateral agricultural trade between Ukraine and Italy with H.E. Mr. Davide La Cecilia, the Minister stressed that at present it has been seen the considerable potential for increasing the volume of trade in food processing industry between Ukraine and Italy. In particular, the high competitive advantages of Ukrainian flour, vegetable oils, starch and syrup, confectionery, alcohol, beer and soft drinks industries.

"I would like to emphasize that Ukraine from year to year increase the organic production, which is in great demand in foreign markets and the quality is constantly improving," - said the Minister.

For his part Davide La Cecilia expressed support for the European aspirations of Ukraine, assured in Italian interest for cooperation with the Ukrainian agribusiness and outlined a wiliness to move to more practical options for cooperation.

The parties also discussed issues on attraction of Italian investments into Ukrainian agriculture.

Taras Kutovyi informed Italian side that the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and food of Ukraine has collected attractive investment proposals and sent the formed portfolio of investment projects in agriculture separated by region of Ukraine to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. "Ukraine needs investment in areas such as construction of agricultural facilities, production of vegetables and dairy products", - said the head of the agricultural institution.

Cooperation between Ukraine and Italy in agriculture carried out in the framework of the Memorandum on cooperation in agriculture between the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry of the Italian Republic.

The Parties cooperate in the following areas:

development and functioning of agricultural markets;

food industry;

production of organic food;

animal breeding and processing of animal products;

biofuels and bioenergy;

plant growing and plant processing, winemaking.

According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, Ukraine within the first 9 months of this year has exported to Italy agricultural products with amount of  $ 368 million, which is 20.5% more than in the same period of 2015. From January to September 2016 import of agricultural products from Italy amounted $ 96.3 million, which is 9.9% more than in the same period of 2015. The basis of Ukrainian exports accounted grain cereals ($ 190 million), oil ($ 89 million) and residues and waste from the food industry ($ 34 million). The main positions of imports from Italy were the skin from the skins of cattle, sheep, lambs, etc. ($ 19.5 million), wine ($ 13 million) and coffee, tea, mate and spices ($ 8 million).
