April 19, the acting Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Olga Trofimtseva, held a selector meeting in an online format with the representatives of the regional state administrations of Ukraine on the topic “Beekeeping: Counteracting the threat of the death of bees ”.
"The issue of counteracting the death of bees remains one of the key issues for the Ministry of Agrarian Policy. It must be remembered that misuse of pesticides leads not only to the death of bees, but also damages the health of citizens and the environment. Specialists of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy have already developed a number of regulatory acts and has established a special Interagency Working Group ", - noted acting Minister and added that all measures would have an effect in the medium term, but the most effective mechanism at present is direct cooperation and constructive dialogue between the farmers and the beekeepers, communication between them is largely dependent on the local authorities.
Olga Trofimtseva said that according to the results of 2018 in regions where the mechanisms of interaction and notification were properly organized, no cases of death of bees from pesticides were been recorded or such death was minimal.
During the conference call, representatives of the regions voiced the problematic issues in the industry and talked about the measures taken and what was planned. In addition, the participants discussed the effective mechanisms aimed at preventing poisoning of bees.
Olga Trofimtseva also noted that on the next meeting the working group on development of beekeeping in the Ministry of Agrarian Policy will focus on other key issues for the industry, such as education and science, leading domestic educational institutions that train specialists in this direction are invited to the meeting.
According to the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, the largest number of cases of death of bees in 2018 was recorded in the following oblasts: Luhansk, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Zhytomyr and Donetsk oblasts.
