On April 16, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy held a kick off meeting of the Interdepartmental Working Group on improvement of legislation on the life cycle of plant protection products. The participants of the Interdepartmental Working Group discussed the global experience of regulating the life cycle of plant protection products, the regulatory system, the main challenges and prospects for regulating the plant protection products in Ukraine.
“The main objective of the established Interdepartmental Working Group on improvement of legislation on the life cycle of plant protection products in Ukraine is to develop an effective mechanism for managing pesticides. The issue of handling the plant protection products (agents) is extremely important and its solution must be approached in a comprehensive manner. The working group and all its members have a number of urgent tasks. In particular, these are issues related to improvement of state legislation on the life cycle of plant protection, studying the best global and domestic practices on the use of plant protection products, as well as arrangement of public events that will enable discussion of current issues in this direction and options to solve them. The society should have complete information and take an active part in the discussion of such important issues,” noted Olga Trofimtseva, acting Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
According to the meeting results, it was decided the following:
- To establish that the Inter-Agency Working Group holds a meeting once a month.
- To form subgroups of IWG that will work on a permanent basis.
- To conduct the meetings of subgroups of the Interdepartmental Working Group in accordance with three main stages of the life cycle of the plant protection product: introduction of new plant protection products into circulation, circulation and use of plant protection products, removal from circulation and disposal of unsuitable / prohibited protection products.
- Within a month to develop a work plan for the Interdepartmental Working Group for 2019.
It should be noted that on April 5, the first Interagency Working Group on the improvement of legislation on the life cycle of plant protection products in Ukraine was established at the Ministry of Agrarian Policy. The working group included representatives of 26 organizations, including governmental agencies, business associations and international projects.
