Canadian partners are interested to invest in the Ukrainian agricultural sector

"Ukrainian agricultural sector has many areas that are interesting for Canadian partners. For example, today we can export not only raw materials, but also high-quality processed products with added value. These are fruits, vegetables, berries, for example frozen, and organic products. The main producer of niche products in Ukraine is small and medium farmer mainly.

Canada today is one of the most active donors in the agricultural sector of Ukraine. The signed this summer Agreement on free trade zone adds new features. Today one of the main priorities of cooperation between our countries – is the development of Ukrainian small and medium farmers.

 

This was discussed during the meeting of Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Olga Trofimtsevoy with Commercial Attaché Mr. Clint Martin, representatives of the Embassy of Canada in Ukraine and Canada  Agribusiness Platform.

"Ukrainian agricultural sector has many areas that are interesting for Canadian partners. For example, today we can export not only raw materials, but also high-quality processed products with added value. These are fruits, vegetables, berries, for example frozen, and organic products. The main producer of niche products in Ukraine is small and medium farmer mainly.

To increase production and export of niche products it is required support for producers by various tools: informational, technical assistance and expertise in the development of modern technologies which will provide access to such markets as the Canadian "- it was said by Olga Trofimtseva during the meeting.

From his side, Mr. Clint Martin said that Canadian businessmen interested in exporting Ukrainian agricultural products, such as organic, due to its quality and competitiveness in the Canadian market. So the Canadian side is ready to provide technical assistance for the development this sector in Ukraine.

He also said that Canadian partners interested in developing of livestock and animal genetics in Ukraine.

Olga Trofimtseva noted that the support and development of animal husbandry in Ukraine - is an important direction for the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine. "This sector includes such interesting areas as the production of feeds, genetics and breeding, where there is great potential for bilateral cooperation", - added the Deputy Minister on European Integration.

During the meeting, Canadian colleagues offered to hold a working meeting of representatives of Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, the Embassy of Canada in Ukraine and representatives of the Canadian projects for more detailed discussion of both existing projects and new initiatives to promote Ukrainian agricultural exports, training of Ukrainian farmers and specialists in the agricultural sector and other issues.

Mr. Clint Martin added that one of the effective tools of cooperation could be a Canada Agribusiness Platform (CABP), through which Ukrainian farmer can find Canadian partners, get information about opportunities of access to the Canadian market and offer their products or projects for potential investors. The Canadian side also emphasized the importance of the participation of Ukrainian companies in the specialized exhibitions and participation of Canadian business on the relevant events in Ukraine.

We remind that Free Trade Agreement between Canada and Ukraine was signed on 11.07.2016, requires ratification. Today there are already operating Canadian technical assistance projects in the agricultural sector in Ukraine. For example, the project "Development of dairy business in Ukraine" operates in Dnipropetrovsk and Lviv oblasts; Project "Business Development of Horticulture" operates in Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhya oblasts; Project "Development of silos and agricultural cooperatives in Ukraine" operates in the Dnipropetrovsk oblast.

For information: Export of Ukrainian agricultural products to Canada amounted to $ 2.8 million in 2016. Mainly there were exported sunflower oil, oilseeds, natural honey and chocolate. Imports amounted to - $ 31.5 million. Mostly there were imported - fish, shellfish, oilseeds, live animals.
