Ukrainian Geographical Indications

published 18 March 2019 12:59

Geographical indications have helped to gain worldwide reputation for such products as champagne, cognac, Roquefort cheese, parmesan and many others. Ukraine is a powerful agricultural country, a food producer, so there are good prospects for the registration of domestic GIs.

On August 31, 2018, the first association in Ukraine was registered, the purpose of which is to promote and protect the domestic product with a geographical indication - the Association of producers of traditional Carpathian Highland cheeses. The Association decided to register the «Hutsul sheep brynza» as the first geographical indication for cheese in Ukraine.

On February 19, 2019, the second Ukrainian Association for Management of Geographical Indication, the Association of Carpathian Shepherds, was registered to manage the geographical indication «Hutsul cow brynza».

On February 12, 2019, a kick off conference of the Association of producers of Kherson watermelon was held in Kherson, which was established to manage the geographical indication «Kherson watermelon».

On February 14, 2019 in Krynychne, in  Odessa oblast, took place a founding conference of the Ukraine's first wine producers association that will deal with development of wine-making zone, registration and control of geographical indications for wine – Association of winegrowers and winemakers – «Danubian Bessarabia».

On February 27, 2019, the constituent meeting of the Association of the Melitopol Cherry Producers took place to manage the geographical indication «Melitopol Cherry».

Manufacturers' interest in registering GIs for their products is growing, so the list of associations - and subsequently registered GIs – will be constantly growing.
